Superstition Selection

Weddings are steeped in tradition and customs, many we don't understand, but adhere to anyway. (Why do we wear wedding bands on the left index finger?) Wedding customs offer a unique way to personalize and bring originality to your event. Here's the where's, why's, and how's of wedding superstitions, traditions, and customs from all over the world. This month’s Superstition Selection is about the origins of tossing the bouquet and garter.

Garter & Bouquet

For the origin of the garter and bridal bouquet toss we have to go back quite a ways. It was customary in the 14th century for the bride to toss her garter to the men. Sometimes the men would get drunk, become impatient, and try to remove the garter ahead of time. Therefore, the custom evolved for the groom to remove and toss the garter. And with that change, the bride started tossing the bridal bouquet to the unwed women of marriageable age. After all, why should the guys have all the fun?

  • Money Saving Measures

Wedding Insurance: To Have or Have Not

This month’s Bridal Bargain is about wedding insurance. That's right there's actually wedding insurance out there! Do you need wedding insurance? Fireman's Fund/RV Nuccio at 800-ENGAGED offers a policy that protects you in case the wedding is canceled, photos are lost, bridal attire is damaged, even if someone gets hurt at your wedding reception. Premiums start at $95. So do you need wedding insurance? Well, Money Magazine picked it as a great example of insurance you DON’T need feeling the skimpy coverage doesn't merit the large premiums. Now, if your reception site requires you to purchase liability insurance-this might be an affordable alternative. But unless your spouse to be might be deployed by the army unexpectedly-stay away from wedding insurance! (based on information from the book Bridal Bargains by Denise & Alan Fields).

  • Q&A Feature

One of our WeddingQuestions.com Members writes:

    Q. The wedding is over! My daughter is concerned as there were close couples/friends that did not give her a card or gift. My brother was one of them and he walked her down the aisle. The Wedding was held at a hotel the whole Memorial Day weekend. Can we ask them?

    A. Congratulations on your daughter’s wedding and your new son-in-law! Although you have been planning this wedding for what seems like forever, wedding dates tend to sneak up on the guests. Etiquette dictates guests have one year’s time to send the newlyweds a gift. So be patient. And under no circumstances should you ask, "Did you get my daughter a wedding present?" especially not this soon after the wedding.

  • Wondering about thank you note etiquette and how much time you have to get them in the mail? How much should you spend on a wedding gift? Get answers to all your wedding questions, guaranteed at WeddingQuestions.com!
